It is my pleasure to write this letter of recommendation for Heather M. Mowry. Heather worked at Ventura College Children's Center from August 1997 through September 1998. Heather started in the fall as an assistant teacher, working in the four-year-old classroom. In the spring, Heather completed her student teacher practicuum requirements in the three-year-old classroom, gradually taking on more responsibility until she was acting as the lead teacher for the second half of the semester. Heather proved to be so able in the role that I assigned her to be the lead teacher in the three-year-old classroom for the summer.
Heather is dependable, punctual, and a self-starter who needs no direction in completing daily classroom tasks. She is flexible and willing to help out wherever she is needed. Heather has a wonderful rapport with young children, works well with other staff members and has built trusting relationships with the parents of the children in her care. She has designed and created curriculum materials and thematic units for use in the classroom, which are both creative and developmentally appropriate. Heather has also initiated projects to make her classroom function more smoothly, such as color coding the wooden blocks so that it would be easier for the children to out them away without help.
In a laboratory school such as this one, student assistants come and go from year to year, often without having much impact in the program. This is definitely not true in Heather's case. After her departure, both parents and children told me how much they missed her. As a staff, we also miss her, both for her contributions to the program as a teacher and for the friendships we have shared. I wholeheartedly recommend Heather as a preschool teacher - she would be an asset to any program.
